Smoketown

Jessica McCarron Current Projects

The Louisville Metro Housing Authority approached Vital Sites in late 2017 about three vacant shotgun houses on the 600 block of East Breckinridge in Smoketown. In summer of 2018, Louisville Metro released an RFP for the three shotgun houses, plus an additional vacant house and 6 empty lots across the 500 and 600 blocks. After many discussions with other organizations, Vital Sites joined with YouthBuild, Habitat for Humanity, Housing Partnership, Inc. (HPI), River City Housing, New Directions Housing Corporation, Bates Memorial Baptist Church, and Bates Community Development to submit a response to the RFP.

VITAL SITES designed a phased master plan for the 2 blocks, plus will plan to assist as a consultant on historic tax credits for the renovated houses.

As of December 2018, the submission was the only one received and was recommended for approval by the Louisville Metro Housing Authority board. We anticipate the project moving forward in spring 2019.
